The novel I'm currently working on is proving hark work, not least because I rarely have time to actually write anything these days.
I hadn't looked at it at all since August, having not had a spare second since school resumed in September, but this weekend, the first of the school holidays, I was determined to go back to it.
All I've managed to do so far is read through and edit the 22 chapters already written. I even took my laptop out yesterday so I could keep working on it while my car was being serviced!
I'm happy with all but the last of the chapters already penned. In fact, I'd even go so far as to say that I'm really impressed with my work and was gripped for most of them, having forgotten so much of what I'd written. Blubbing in Costa while I re-read one part was proof of just how emotionally charged and effective my words could be. I wrote them, yet they still touched me! The trouble is, the last chapter, written in a rush in August, is not the same quality as its predecessors, and the one I tried to write yesterday in place of it was equally poor. Furthermore, last night's attempt at Chapter 23 was absolute tosh!
I need the ideas to flow as I want to finish this book before the end of the year. Writing the remaining eight to ten chapters should be more than doable in the time I have available, but it will only happen if I can work out where I want the novel and the characters to go from here.... that's the bit I can't quite grasp yet!
Wish me luck!
